Is your smile missing teeth? Dental implants a popular option to replace missing teeth. Implant dentistry is the most clinically successful dental implantstherapy available to replace one or more missing teeth. Dr. Sean Stannard and Dr. David Studt at Stannard & Studt & Wolf Dentistry in Waterford, MI, offer state-of-the-art dental implants. Read on to learn about the three basic parts of a dental implant.

Dental Implant

The dental implant is a small post which is implanted into the jawbone and sits below the gum line. The dental implant is a replacement tooth root made of titanium. Titanium is used for dental implants because it is biocompatible. The body doesn't reject it, and it bonds easily with bone. The dental implant is screwed into the bone of the jaw providing a fixed platform on which an abutment can be screwed. After the surrounding bone has healed to the dental implant, replacement teeth are secured to the top of the implants.

Implant Abutment

The abutment connects the fixture to the crown and holds it in place. The abutment is a titanium or ceramic component that ensures a secure fit between the crown and dental implant. The abutment is typically not screwed to the dental implant until after the osseointegration process has taken place. These abutments can be made from a variety of materials, such as surgical stainless steel, titanium and gold. More modern abutments are now also made from zirconia.

Dental Crown

Once the implant and the abutment are in place, your Waterford dentist cements or screws the dental crown onto the abutment. The dental crown adds the finishing touch to your new implant. Dental crowns are made of porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-metal and look just like your own teeth. The dental crown is the portion of the implant that you see inside of your mouth. The dental crown provides a functional chewing surface and restores your bite. It allows you to bite and chew comfortably.
