Your Invisalign smile

Invisalign clear aligners look a lot like professional teeth whitening trays. Customized for a snug fit, these acrylic appliances move teeth--just as traditional braces do. However, unlike metal, lingual, or ceramic braces, there are no irritating wires or brackets, no lengthy oral hygiene requirements, and no off-limits foods. Simply put, Invisalign aligners are easier to live with, very discreet, and 100 percent removable.

With their amazing benefits comes treatment applications for a wide variety of orthodontic issues such as:

  • Gaps
  • Crowding
  • Overbite
  • Crossbite
  • Openbite
  • Underbite
  • Tooth rotation and tipping
  • Protruding front teeth

While dentists still employ conventional braces for complicated smile alignment problems, Invisalign works for a wide array of mild to moderate problems. Plus, treatment takes just nine to 18 months--not the two to two and a half years or more typical of metal braces.

Walking the Invisalign path

Dr. Stannard or Dr. Studt in Waterford will guide you through your treatment with Invisalign. You'll receive a complete examination, X-rays, oral impressions, and a special three-dimensional scan. With this information, the Invisalign lab will craft your aligner pairs.

Typically, patients wear 18 to 30 pairs for two weeks each. You may remove them for meals, brushing, and flossing, and while the aligners are very discreet, some patients elect to take them out for special events such as weddings and professional presentations.

Throughout your treatment, you'll visit Stannard & Studt Dentistry every month to six weeks for progress checks. These appointments are quick and easy because there are no wires to adjust or rubber bands to replace.

After your Invisalign treatment is completed, you'll wear a retainer. This removable or bonded on appliance keeps your beautiful, straight smile perfectly aligned for years.

If you have interpersonal or professional goals that are hampered by a smile that's less than perfect, Invisalign clear aligners could solve your problem. Having helped millions of older teens and adults across the globe get the healthy, attractive smiles they've always wanted, Invisalign is an innovative orthodontic solution popular with people who dislike the look of conventional braces. Your dentists at Stannard, Studt & Wolf Dentistry in Waterford, MI outline Invisalign's many advantages and can help you decide if the clear aligners are right for you.

What are Invisalign aligners?

They are custom-made, invisible acrylic appliances which straighten a variety of orthodontic problems such as overbite, under bite, cross bite, open bite, gaps, crowding, tooth tipping and more. So instead of struggling with the obvious appearance, dietary restrictions and hygiene struggles of metal or ceramic braces, patients enjoy:

  • Ease of brushing and flossing because the aligners are removable
  • No irritation of soft oral tissues as the aligners are perfectly smooth
  • Practically unnoticeable appearance (although some people remove them for special occasions)
  • Whatever healthy foods they normally eat
  • Shorter treatment times (typically one year on average)

In addition, Invisalign patients see their dentist in Waterford just every four to six weeks for quick progress checks and to receive the next pairs of clear aligners in their treatment plans. There are no complex, lengthy and uncomfortable adjustments to endure. The proprietary Smart Track Acrylic is known to move teeth reliably. In other words, Invisalign appliances can meet the smile goals you and your dentist decide are best for your appearance, dental health and oral function.

Can you qualify?

Most likely you can if your teeth and gums are healthy--that is, no gum disease or untreated tooth decay. Your dentist in Waterford will do a complete oral exam and take X-rays, photos and other imaging to see if Invisalign is right for you. Also, he'll take impressions to send, along with detailed instructions, to the Invisalign lab where a skilled technician will craft 18 to 30 pairs of appliances that will gradually move your teeth into better positions.

Would you like to straighten your teeth or improve your bite but don't want to deal with the limitations of traditional metal or ceramic braces? The Invisalign brace system offers a better way to improve your smile. Dr. Sean Stannard and Dr. David Studt, your Waterford, MI dentists at Stannard & Studt & Wolf, explain how the Invisalign system works.

No more wires and brackets

For years, the only way to realign the position of teeth was by attaching wires and brackets to them. Although traditional braces offer a very effective way to align teeth, many people hate the thought of wearing a mouthful of metal for several years. The Invisalign system uses a series of clear, removable aligner trays instead of wires and brackets. Every two weeks, you'll begin wearing new aligners created just for you.

Computerized technology with your Waterford, MI dentists

Before you receive your first set of aligners, your dentist creates a 3-D image of your teeth using the special Invisalign software. The image is compiled from X-rays, dental impressions and photographs of your mouth. Manipulating the image on the screen allows him to design the series of trays that will correct your alignment problem.

A solution that fits your lifestyle

Traditional braces require a lot of care. You must avoid eating hard or sticky foods to prevent damages to the wires and brackets and need to increase the amount of time you spend on oral hygiene to keep your wires free of food debris. Caring for Invisalign braces isn't nearly as time intensive. Since you'll remove them to eat, you won't have to worry about food getting caught in them. Brushing and flossing as easy as ever. Once you finish brushing, you'll simply rinse your trays and put them back in your mouth.

Your clear aligner trays are designed to be unnoticeable, but there still may be times when you would rather not wear them. Luckily, you can remove them for a few hours to play your favorite sport or take them out for an important photograph or special event. Although they can be removed occasionally, it's important to wear the aligners for 20 hours per day for best results.

Why not let Invisalign transform your smile? Call Dr. Stannard and Dr. Studt, your Waterford, MI dentists at Stannard & Studt & Wolf, at (248) 673-7300 to schedule an appointment.

While many people are familiar with the clear alternative to braces, Invisalign, they may not know exactly how it works or if the treatment is right for them. Standard & Studt & Wolf Dentistry in Waterford, MI can help you put together the pieces.

How does Invisalign straighten teeth? Invisalign
Invisalign uses a series of clear aligner trays worn in succession, which move the teeth on a predetermined path planned out by your dentist. The teeth are moved slowly by each aligner tray by using steady pressure on the teeth to be moved. The trays are replaced about every two weeks.

The trays are completely removable, so being active, eating, brushing your teeth and anything else that may be affected by traditional braces is just as easy as it was before braces with Invisalign. However, since the trays are removable, your results will depend on your commitment to wearing them. The trays should be worn at all times, except while eating or brushing.

Am I a candidate for Invisalign?
Most people are able to receive Invisalign treatment. People with the following conditions could benefit from Invisalign:

  • overbite
  • underbite
  • cross bite
  • crowded teeth
  • gapping

Invisalign works best on adults and teenagers, but children may not benefit from Invisalign since their teeth are still growing.

How is Invisalign different than traditional braces?
Since Invisalign is clear, there are no messy wires or brackets to worry about. Since Invisalign uses trays instead of metal hardware, there is no need to use special flossers to clean between and underneath the wires. Traditional braces also require you to avoid certain foods, such as popcorn, apples, chewing gum or other sticky foods. With Invisalign, you can simply remove your aligner tray and enjoy all your favorite foods.
